Once the full system clone is made, ChronoSync will only handle the Data volume in subsequent syncs. ChronoSync 10 takes advantage of Apple's APFS replication utility (called ASR) to create a cloned image on the destination volume. It ignored the System volume and could only sync the Data volume which was a less than ideal scenario. ChronoSync's approach to creating bootable backups on Big Sur was a bit cumbersome. Starting with Big Sur you could no longer copy the System volume. Since Catalina, Apple split the main drive into two volumes: System and Data.

Sometimes you have to click through a submenu, but overall the backup of desired files and folders as well as the recovery (don’t forget!) is very simple. The user interface looks simple and tidy, but still offers extensive functions. So if you want to back up to a NAS such as Synology and not lose a lot of metadata, Arq is the best – and only – choice. Users who want to back up to a remote NAS also have a big advantage: They can connect via SFTP and back up the data including all macOS metadata, since Arq backs up independently of the file system. This also makes it an ideal choice if you want to use an online storage service such as Amazon S3, Google Drive or OneDrive. It is the only one that allows you to encrypt the data coming from your Mac before it is stored elsewhere.
